Virtualisation Savings Case Study
Solsis have made some pretty bold claims about VMware around the great cost savings to be made and how, for example, to date over six million desktop computers and servers have been virtualised, saving more electricity per year than the heating and cooling of the entire country of Denmark! Sounds too good to be true? This is why the technical team at Solsis have since mid-2008 been testing these claims.
"Solsis can calculate the environmental benefits of a company ‘going virtual’, showing the equivalent of how many cars would in theory be taken off the road, how many trees planted, and even the annual CO2 emissions saved."
Graham Stead, MD at Solsis stated “Solsis can calculate the environmental benefits of a company ‘going virtual’, showing the equivalent of how many cars would in theory be taken off the road, how many trees planted, and even the annual CO2 emissions saved. We decided that we would be our first case study to see if going virtual significantly improved our environmental impact, and if in turn it would save us money – before we recommended the solution on to our customers!”
The Project:
Previously the server infrastructure at Solsis consisted of 6 servers of which all were due to be replaced over the next 4 years. Additionally, a further 10 servers were to be deployed to support future business growth, and a data increase from 400GB to 1.1TB. Our technical team then implemented the VMware infrastructure solution and used our Total Cost of Ownership calculator to analyse the results.
The Results:
- Cost saving of £134K
- 448% return on investment
- Annual reduction of 28 tonnes of carbon emissions
- Equivalent of taking 10 cars off the road per year or planting 206 trees over 4yrs
Implementing our new VMware infrastructure for an investment of £30K provided us with a cost saving of £134,281 over just the next 4 years alone, a staggering 448% return on investment - great news as far as our Financial Director was concerned! Not only were the cost savings compelling, we were also achieving far more as a company through the implementation. We took the number of servers down from 6, plus the further 10 we were expecting to install in the next 4 years, to a mere 3 – meaning an enormous saving on space. Our operating power draw reduced by 7.4kWatts. Most importantly (though the Financial Director obviously disagrees!) was Solsis achieving an annual reduction of 28 tonnes of carbon emissions, equivalent to taking 10 cars off the road per year or planting 206 trees over 4yrs! Worthwhile results indeed!
The technical team was over the moon with the implementation and results, stating “the costs generated from our TCO calculator were within 3% of what we actually spent on the infrastructure, which was very reassuring. We probably have more virtual servers than we would in a standard environment, but this allows each application to have a fully protected space to work in which improves service availability. Another benefit has been the ease with which we can create test and development platforms, for the technical team here it makes life a lot easier and this will flow directly through to an improved service for our clients.”
